The Nez Perce people are credited for saving the lives of the Corps of Discovery explorers who entered their camp near starvation. There is evidence dating back more than 11,000 years of Nez Perce inhabiting the regions surrounding the Clearwater and Snake River valleys. Today, the Nez Perce Tribe still reflects the time honored cultural ideals of the past while meeting the demands of the modern world.Īccording to tribal legend, Nimiipuu, “the people,” were created in north central Idaho at the dawn of time. Throughout the years, the Nez Perce have become superb horsemen and are renowned for being a hospitable people. Long before the Lewis & Clark Expedition entered the homelands of the Nez Perce in 1805, the Nez Perce Native Americans have hunted, fished, and traded in villages along the Clearwater, Snake and Salmon Rivers.
